Ensure you hold fast with this choice as well; dont surrender to the allurement of adjusting your perspective if your accomplice attempts to convince you in any case, or regardless of whether he verbally puts you down. On the off chance that you wind up in a circumstance that is making you even somewhat awkward or on the off chance that you feel that it may prompt something that will make you awkward, dont be reluctant to state no or even expel yourself from the circumstance. Whatever the explanation, in the event that you wind up strolling some place around evening time, carry a companion with you at whatever point conceivable. In the event that this isnt an option,â make sure you have your mobile phone with youâ and have your campuss security number modified in your telephone. Stroll in a sufficiently bright region and stay away from alternate routes that bring you into dull or less-voyaged territories, regardless of how advantageous they may appear. Do whatever it takes Not to Act on Impulse This tip can apply to any of the zones referenced beforehand. Thoroughly consider a circumstance as altogether as possible before settling on a choice to do (or not accomplish) something. Staying in bed as opposed to going to class may appear to be engaging at eight toward the beginning of the day, yet when your unlucky deficiencies begin to pile up and influence your evaluation, youre going to wish that you had essentially gotten up and gone to class. (We have discovered that once we drag ourselves up and get going toward the beginning of the day, the sleepiness rapidly wears off, now and again when I leave my quarters.) Having unprotected sex may appear to be progressively helpful or fun from the outset, yet there can be not kidding results included. Taking a couple of moments to thoroughly consider a choice before you act is much simpler than managing the eventual outcomes of something that appeared to be a smart thought at that point. Know about the Resources Available to You Because youre in school and are viewed as a grown-up doesnt imply that it isnt alright to request help. Regardless of whether it be scholastic or individual, your school is loaded with individuals or gatherings that are happy to suit you in any region that you may require. On the off chance that you arent sure who precisely you can go to for help, ask somebody, for example, your Resident Advisor to guide you to the proper individual or individuals. HISTORY - Essay Example As Lynch calls attention to, one of the letters kept in touch with New Orleans’ Daily Delta from the opportunity development warriors expresses that the shaded populace adores their home, their property, and their own laves and are prepared to shed their blood for safeguarding their privileges. The activists got incredulous of the government’s approaches and methodologies too. The administration had not given any consideration to the relentless savagery towards the dark extremist; and then again, there was absence of government intercession. These issues caused them go to furnished self-preservation, and much of the time they wound up in gore. All blacks engaged in the development and they required a dark solidarity and patriotism. Similarly, blacks in the northern networks began to draw consideration against the uncontrolled prejudice winning in the state. The staggering issues, for example, the private isolation, provocations from the police and authorities, and the a bsence of business openings were going about as power for the dark opportunity developments in the eighteenth century. Living in Small Towns is Better Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Living in Small Towns is Better - Essay Example Significant serenity can be experienced uniquely in modest communities since they are liberated from such issues. The way that individuals living in littler towns live longer than individuals living in greater urban areas was demonstrated in Japan. In one of the examinations directed on inhabitants of Okinawa, a modest community in Japan, it was demonstrated that these occupants lived for generally prolonged stretch of time contrasted with different occupants of large urban communities. The explanation behind their long life was ascribed to the quiet air that existed there. The occurrence of wellbeing related issues like stroke, caused because of apprehensive strains and additionally feelings, was higher in enormous urban communities because of the hurried and occupied life. Carrying on with an ordinary life for the most part requires true serenity, which is conceivable through a quiet way of life and can be discovered distinctly in an unassuming community. Also, littler towns are progressively protected and secure to carry on with a typical life. Examples of street car crashes, violations, and robberies are a lot lesser in modest communities contrasted with enormous urban areas. Individuals can make a trip to wherever and whenever, significantly after 12 PM, unafraid. Level of wellbeing in modest communities can be surveyed dependent on the way that individuals in humble communities infrequently lock their entryways. Street car crashes are likewise incredibly uncommon in humble communities, presumably because of less substantial vehicle and vehicle traffic. The quantity of individuals who use vehicles for voyaging is extremely less in modest communities. Consequently, littler towns are a lot more secure and progressively secure. The third valid justification for living in an unassuming community is its a lot less expensive and reasonable typical cost for basic items. Citing a case of the expense of utilities, in Florida, for a two-room condo, I needed to take care of $150 towards power tab, while in Utah, I pay just $70 for a townhouse. There is a gigantic contrast in the expense of land of a major city and an unassuming community. A companion of mine in Los Angeles pays around $1600 for a two-room apartment.â

Reflecting on 10 Years and Lessons Learned

Reflecting on 10 Years and Lessons Learned Happy 10th birthday, blogs!!! I made you a cake! (With help from  Random Halls 40th Birthday Hack.) Birthdays are special times. Times for cakes, celebrations, and sometimes songs. They are also a natural point to look back and reflect. This year is not only the blogs 10th birthday, but also the 10th anniversay of my MIT journey. 10 years ago today, I was just about to start my senior year of high school, and everything that came with it classes, activities, tests, applications, decisions If I look back and remember where I thought my life would go, I wasnt even close. I wouldve guessed that I would attend UW Madison (wrong), triple major (typical MIT frosh ambitions), become a lawyer (wrong), and be married with kids within 5-10 years (not yet). I had no idea that I would bike halfway across the country, build robots, or do work in five countries. I also had no idea that I could ever fail a test, accidentally set myself on fire while trying to cook, or contract histoplasmosis while exploring a cave. Looking back at these 10 years, several lessons stand out to me. Some of them, I figured out quickly; others were difficult and painful to learn. I’ve described the lessons that I learned in the order I learned them, but there’s no reason that you need to take 10 years to learn them! I hope that these lessons can be guideposts that allow you to learn, enjoy yourself, and have success in college and beyond. 1. Senior Year of High School: Its About the Match College is about much more than books and classes its about the people, teams, trips, parties, and late-night study sessions. When you choose a school, youre choosing the professors youll listen to, but youre also choosing the atmosphere you will live in and the people youll be friends with. Look for communities that youre excited to be a part of. Then, when you apply, let your passion come through so that the school can see why someone like you would be great to have on campus. I didn’t understand this when I started to look at colleges and to apply. I started off applying to the places that seemed to have easier application processes â€" this is about the worst thing you can do when applying to schools. I eventually realized that MIT was the community I wanted to be a part of, and I have never regretted the decision. 2. Freshman Year: Find Your Home When youre starting out in college, the most important thing to do is to get your bearings. Whether its your dorm, the softball team, or a sorority, find the group of people (or place or activity) that makes you feel comfortable and grounded keep looking until you find them! School will inevitably become busy, and difficult, and overwhelming. When you get to that point, you need the place that you can go to where you can vent, cry, or just take a break. For me, Home was BMF Floor in Random Hall, and it saved my sanity many, many times. The chocolate Disney loving floor of a closeknit nerdy dorm may not be the place for everyone, but it was the place that I always felt absolutely comfortable being my chocolate-scarfing, Disney-song-singing, nerdy self. 3. Sophomore Year: When You’re Going Through Hell, Keep Going (But Not Always in the Same Direction) If you’re challenging yourself, there will be times when you have more work than you know how to handle â€" yet. When that happens, you have to grit your teeth, consume some caffeine, and power through. Then, it’s also important to look closely at the situation, figure out what skills you need, and work on building them, however hard that may seem. To the left is a representative picture from Sophomore Year. Can you tell that I didn’t sleep much? I had already learned Freshman Year that I didn’t know how to study. I’d never needed to in High School, and now that I needed those skills I wasn’t sure where to start. I would stay up the nights before tests, stressing about not knowing how to prepare, tiring myself out, and occasionally reviewing some material. If I had taken time between tests to learn more about how to better plan and study, I could have saved myself many sleepless nights. 4. Junior Year: Explore, Explore, Explore! Once you’ve found that community, that Home of yours â€" leave it! Find ways to go explore and to find out how other cultures compare to yours. College is set up to allow you to do this easily and cheaply â€" look for your chances to volunteer, study, or intern abroad. Take classes that involve field work. Buy cheap tickets to Europe over winter or summer break, rent a car with friends, and see what’s out there to see. You’ll never again have such easy access to vacation time, you’re still easily able to adapt to less than luxurious accommodations, and you probably don’t have responsibilities to a family of your own yet. Go, go, go. Try new foods, follow an unknown path, talk to strangers, visit a local museum, and take a few pictures along the way. I wove these opportunities into my experience, and the experiences were amazing. I was able to take the TGV between Frankfurt and Paris, eat crepes with chocolate in Switzerland and fries with spiced mayo in Belgium, ride around Honduras in the bed of a pickup truck, climb Mount Hua in China, and explore the Deutsches Muesum with friends. Keep an eye out for opportunities to travel, and they will appear. 5. Senior Year: Focus There is so much to explore in college. Topics, groups, events… You need to explore, but once you have explored it’s time to focus in. Master your major, and focus on the extracurricular that you’re most passionate about. This lesson was a hard one for me â€" from MIT Marching Band to my service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega, I was interested in and involved in a lot of activities. Finding the right balance is still something that I work on, but I know now that it’s possible to get more enjoyment and better results when you’re not spread too thin. 6. MEng Year: Research is What I’m Doing When I Don’t Know What I’m Doing Become okay with not having all the answers. Sometimes you just need to have an idea, a plan, and a timeline. I completed a Master’s my 5th year, combining my Thesis work and additional classes with other courses that I had taken in previous years. Research is much more open-ended than even a project-based class, and that aspect was hard for me. I didn’t know which directions would be the most fruitful to investigate or how long I would need to trace down different routes. My advisor gave me a bookmark with a quote by Wernher von Braun: Research is What I’m Doing When I Don’t Know What I’m Doing. That attitude, of confidently approaching a problem and forming a hypothesis and a plan, turns out to be a powerful one to take. It applies not only to research, but also to many other fields of work. 7. The Real World, Year 1: Value People Skills as well as Technical Skills At MIT (or in school in general), it can be easy to focus on specific knowledge and technical skills and tasks. The real world is not so simple. No one is going to give you a numbered problem set, and no one is going to implement your solution just because you wrote it down. Out of school, I joined Stroud Consulting, an Operations and Management Consulting Firm. I knew that I’d be helping clients solve technical challenges â€" and I focused on the “technical” aspect. It turned out that the technical work was the easier portion. I needed to learn to build alignment to a plan, coach constructive mindsets and working routines, and drive goal-oriented actions. I had never thought of these as skills I needed, but I now realize that it’s nearly impossible to work without them. 8. The Real World, Year 2: You Can Always Learn and Improve This is a tricky lesson to learn: even if you’re smart, your intelligence and your knowledge is not your best asset. Over time, motivation and the willingness to learn from past experience is key. Everyone will have challenges, and everyone will fail. If you’re afraid to expose your weaknesses, you’ll never strengthen them. All of the above sounds logical and straightforward. In practice though, it’s easy to fall into the routine of thinking of yourself as smart. If other people routinely refer to you as smart, if you occasionally reason yourself out of scrapes or tests you forgot to study for, or if you score well on standard tests that measure IQ and Aptitude, then you too can fall into the trap of thinking that your success is due solely to a fixed intelligence as opposed to the will to learn and improve. I did, for a long time, and it held me back without me being aware. I finally read Mindset by Carol Dweck (nearly 2 years after I was originally assigned to read it.) Id recommend this book to anyone heres an  Amazon link  to get you started.  The ability to see my Fixed mindset and take steps towards a Growth mindset was truly powerful. It’s continued to serve me since I left consulting and moved on to a fast-growing furniture startup in Connecticut. Currently at Lovesac, I work to improve our technical systems and business processes to support 40% year-over-year growth while also improving the customer experience. Given our rapid growth, the ability to learn and quickly adapt is essential. 9. The Real World, Year 3: Learn to Make Yourself Happy Pay attention to the little things you can do to increase your own happiness. Sometimes, you really need it, during a stressful time in your professional or personal life. Other times, it’s just nice to be happy. :-) I’m partial to Dodie Smith’s maxim: “Noble deeds and hot baths are the best cures for depression.” There are a few other things I’ve added to the list over time â€" mostly simple things like exercise and massage. 10. The Real World, Year 4: Remember Where You Came From Finally, make time to go back to your roots. Talk to old friends, read the books you read in high school, and make time for family. I realized that I’d changed â€" a lot â€" in the past 10 years. Some changes are good, but others are neutral or negative. Many of them just happened as I adjusted to new situations I encountered. This year, my focus is on remembering the best of who I’ve been and bringing my favorite elements back into my life. To the joys and the learning from the past 10 years, and to 10 great years to come!

Omniscient Benjy, the Impact of Watching, and Dilsey the Relic - Literature Essay Samples

In The Sound and the Fury, William Faulkner draws attention to Benjys ability to watch through his inability to speak. His character tends toward omniscience, as he constantly stumbles upon (or takes part in) various clandestine acts but does not have the power to articulate these events. Through these situations, Benjy emerges as a weakened representative of Jesus, able to see a great deal, but powerless to impact the immoral doings he encounters. The parallels between Benjy and Jesus seem clear; the reader first meets him on his thirty-third birthday, the day before Easter, etc. However, Benjy represents an extremely diluted version of what Jesus ought to be, only able to change events through his watching eyes, and even then on only the vaguest of terms, unable to make any real difference in characters lives. He discovers both Caddy (seemingly the least corrupt Compson) and Quentin in the woods with lovers, making both girls run away from the situation. Even so, in both cas es Benjy merely delays the inevitable: Caddy gets married at fourteen, and Quentin elopes the next morning with her lover. Benjy thus plays the contradictory role of a moral voice without a voice, making others uncomfortable with their immorality by watching them rather than scolding them. With Benjy as the symbolic Jesus in the novel, it seems that the greater implications are for the seemingly inescapable decay of any concrete human values, with only a vague paranoia regarding the wrongness of ones actions replacing true religious feelings. Faulkner does offer a sort of racialized alternative to the Compsons in Dilsey by demonstrating her stronger sense of spirituality. Dilseys family, though, merely delays the decay of humanity, and if Dilsey represents a moral authority with a voice, hardly anyone listens to her. Most of the significant moments in Benjys narrative arise from him innocently encountering some sort of immoral undertaking that he would not have access to if he we re not mentally disabled. Either other people force Benjy to take part, or he genuinely stumbles upon the situation. One of the first such instances occurs when he acts as a messenger between Uncle Maury and the adulterous Mrs. Patterson (which he botches by giving the note to Mr. Patterson) and promptly runs away (9). T.P. and the male Quentin also force him to participate in their drunken sassprilluh session, which they give to him in part because they want him to hush and not give them away to the rest of the wedding (14). In both these instances, others sort of coerce Benjy into these acts, and he manages to disrupt them in some way. When he finds Caddy and the female Quentin in the woods, however, he does so independently and even against his caretakers commands. Benjy thus seems to have a nose for uncovering the shamefully hidden, acting always as an innocent witness, producing a sense of guilt in Caddy and at least interrupting Quentins tryst with her lover. He comes b etween the girls and their immoral sexual relationships outside marriage, but only on the vaguest of moral ground-their discomfort with continuing in front of the innocent eyes of Benjy. When Benjy catches Caddy with Charlie in the woods, she originally tries to make him go home, and it seems that only in the course of her encounter with her brother does she realize the fault of her actions. She confesses to Benjy, and he confers upon her a sort of revelation regarding her promiscuity. Faulkner writes,Charlie came and put his hands on Caddy and I cried more Are you crazy. Caddy said. He can see. Dont. Dont. Caddy foughtCaddy and I ranI could hear her and feel her chest. I wont. she said. I wont anymore, ever. Benjy. Benjy. Then she was crying, and I cried, and we held each other. Hush. she said. Hush. I wont anymore. So I hushed and Caddy got up and we went into the kitchen and turned the light on and Caddy took the kitchen soap and washed her mouth at the sink, hard. (31) Here, Faulkner clearly highlights Benjys role as a watcher in what drives Caddy to take him home. She tells Charlie, he can see as the only reason why he should not touch her in Benjys presence. After Caddy and Benjy make it to the house, her guilt overcomes her, and she cries, repeating both Benjys name and her promise, I wont anymore. It seems that with such a silent, innocent witness nearby the immoral act of promiscuity simply cannot continue; indeed, Benjys watching eyes make Caddy realize the error of her ways. In this way Benjy continues his Jesus role by being the person to whom his sister sort of confesses in her realization of shame, and even, perhaps, undergoes penance in front of by washing her mouth out with soap. However, this newly installed morality eventually fails; Caddy goes on to lose her virginity a few years later, and gets married the following year, after she sullies herself by having sex before marriage. Even so, it is because Caddy exists among the les s corrupt Compsons that she feels any sort of morality through Benjy-her daughter, Quentin, only allows Benjy to interrupt her rendezvous with the man from the show, and does not seem to gain any greater moral insight, however fleeting it may be.Quentin, as Caddys offspring, represents the next generation of Compson in a more corrupt version of her mother. Through Benjys consciousness and his concurrent remembrance of Caddy, the reader realizes Quentins parallel situation, caught by Benjy on the swings with her lover. Rather than his eyes producing moral shame like Caddys, Benjy only makes Quentin and her lover somewhat uncomfortable. The impact of his watching is thus diluted as the Compsons decay, moving away from a spiritual, morally concrete world where good and bad are pre-arranged for people by a society or religion. In a paragraph neighboring Caddys escape with Benjy, Faulkner writes,You old crazy loon, Quentin said. Im going to tell Dilsey about the way you let him foll ow everywhere I go. Im going to make her whip you good You were snooping around after me. Did Grandmother send you all out here to spy on me. She jumped out of the swing[Quentins lover] struck a match and put it in his mouthI opened my mouth. Quentin hit the match with her hand and it went awayQuentin ran on the house. She went around the kitchen. (31-32)A few paragraphs down, Luster gives Benjy the contraceptive labeled Agnes Mabel Becky, which provides the initial evidence that Quentin indeed has sex in that area, a problem worse than her mothers, who loses her virginity years after Benjy discovers her in the woods. Once again, though, the watching eyes of Benjy produce Quentins initial strong reaction, asking, Did Grandmother send you all out here to spy on me. Her worry does not result from Benjys innocent gaze, but from a more paranoid, morally bankrupt view of a world that assumes a bad intention behind even Benjys actions. Faulkner further reveals her separation from her mother when she runs around the kitchen, the very place Caddy finds her moral ground with Benjy. As mentioned earlier, Benjy manages to delay Caddys corruption a few years, but Quentin leaves home the next morning with the man from the show. Thus, the intensification of Compson promiscuity also comes with a diluted ability to find any sense of moral concreteness through the innocence of Benjy. The lack of a moral-spiritual basis for the Compson family becomes clear in a number of ways throughout the book; aside from their ability to ignore Benjys omniscient gaze, none of them seem to change their schedules on Easter Sunday. Mrs. Compson only complains about how she cannot get rest even on a Sunday, Jason goes so far as to gripe about letting the servants visit church, and Quentin sees no problem in running away with her lover. The Compson decay and lack of moral center coincides well with a lack of spirituality-Faulkner seems to ask whether one can have a sense of moral concr eteness without a spiritual center. Through the Compsons, Faulkner documents the retreat of religion in a modern society. Jesus, or Benjy, is quasi-omniscient but not omnipotent or capable of affecting the spiritless world in any significant way.Faulkner offers a problematic possible counter to the Compsons lack of a spiritual center in Dilsey, the old black servant who fervently believes in Jesus, even proclaiming Ive seed de first en de last (185), a statement similar to one made by Jesus himself in Revelation 22:13. She uses her voice in the Compson house to defend those who need it, most particularly the female Quentin from Jasons irrational rages, thereby demonstrating an altruism absent in most Compson actions. Faulkner clearly sets her up as a romanticized character, able to feel religion through the Easter church service, resulting in her proclamation above. She exudes an aura of odd dignity in Faulkners first objective description of her in chapter four:She wore a sti ff black straw hat perched upon her turban, and a maroon velvet cape with a border of mangy and anonymous fur above a dress of purple silk, and she stood in the door for a while with her myriad and sunken face lifted to the weather She had been a big woman once but now her skeleton rose, draped loosely in unpadded skinas though muscle and tissue had been courage or fortitude which the days or the years had consumed until only the indomitable skeleton was left rising like a ruin or a landmark(165)In this passage, Dilseys worn, but once impressive, costume of velvet and silk represents her status as a sort of aged queen, forced into years of hard labor. All the fabrics and their colors named evoke this reading: purple silk, maroon velvet, and fur, which are hardly the kinds of things even the wealthiest person wears without a certain pomposity involved. The turban serves to add exoticism, though covered by her banal black straw hat-doubtless the imposition of America upon her Africa n past. However, Dilseys outfit, like the survival of her spirituality in later generations of her family, seems doomed. Her fur is mangy, and her skeleton seems to rise out of her flesh as a sign of impending death, the courage and fortitude in her body consumed until she looks like a ruin or landmark, objects which represent a fallen civilization or way of life. The spirituality and moral concreteness Dilseys ruin represents indeed appears diluted through the generations of her family, though to a lesser extent than in the Compsons. Although the whole family goes to church together, one can detect signs of Compson-like decay in Luster, Dilseys grandson. He seems to take pleasure in torturing Benjy by saying Caddy in his ear or shutting the fireplace from Benjys view, offenses heightened by the notion of Benjy as a representative of Jesus. Dilseys admonishing, moralistic remarks have little effect on Lusters activities. The fact that even Dilseys family remains subject to the sp iritual vacuousness so prevalent in the Compsons doubtless holds importance. No one, it appears, can retain a moral compass through the assault of time, moving the families swiftly into the depths of the modern age. One might question Faulkners motivations in presenting the black servant family as less subject to this problem; he seems to exoticize Dilsey at least, his description of her outfit certainly corresponding to the way one might picture African royalty, with their animal nature represented in her furs. Perhaps Faulkner sees the only alternative to modernitys moral flexibility in another, more primitive culture. The comparison of the spiritually successful, black St. Louis preacher to a small, aged monkey (182) fits with this interpretation. The author excuses himself from a totally romanticized, racist view of blacks in the fact that Dilseys family decays, too, but the use of her as a black counterexample to the white Compsons feels problematic. In any case, if Dilse y and the voiceless Benjy-Jesus represent the last bulwarks of Christian belief in the novel, the days or years which consume her body illustrate Faulkners belief in the inevitability of the Compsons moral crisis and its extension to every social niche. It is impossible to shield forthcoming generations from such problems just as it is impossible to shield ones body from the onslaught of time.

The Importance of Family Relationships in The Young...

In The Young Couple, Jhabvala illustrates the difficulties Cathy experiences in family relationships upon moving to India after her marriage to Naraian, whereas in Two Kinds, Amy Tan describes the difficulties Jing-mei, the heroine, faces in her relationship with her mother. Part of these difficulties are caused by the clash of cultures that the heroines in both stories experience. Cathy feels that she does not fit in to Indian culture and Jing-mei has to live with a mother who, at crucial times, shows that she lives her life according to Chinese principles, whereas Jing-mei prefers the independent, American lifestyle. From the beginning of The Young Couple, Jhabvala makes clear how†¦show more content†¦Naraians family seems to control the couples lives as everything that she does is the subject of scrupulous family concern and because Naraian is annoyed with Indian families, who will not allow a man to take his own decisions but regard it as their right to take them for him. This interference of the family is important as a dramatic tool, to the progress of The Young Couple, as it is this interference that begins to create problems for Naraian and Cathy, as they came to India with a life of purpose and a challenge awaiting them, and after the family start to interfere in the couples affairs, they seem to be prevented from doing anything worthwhile. Their problems seem to revolve around the idea that Cathy cannot live this family-orientated lifestyle. She is unable to get a job for herself, and we know this affects her, as she begins to show signs of boredom; twisting and untwisting the end of her golden plait and she considers her current situation depressing. She cannot get a job because the sort of jobs she would be permitted to do in India depends on her background and social standing, and she is not qualified for these jobs. This shows how the social standing of the family even influences decisions, such as finding a job, which would be an individual decision inShow MoreRelatedMarriage in the 17th Century1546 Words   |  7 Pagesdifferent back then than they are now. Effects of the Global Financial Crisis on the...

Abstract Since July 2007, leading economist believe that this has been the worst financial crisis since the great depression. This essay outlines various viewpoints and influences in respect to the paradigm. Firstly it defines, Global Financial Crisis (GFC) and the impact it has had on International Accounting Standards in regards to implementation and use of their accounting regulations. It also examines The Fair Value Measurement in accordance to the effect it has on the GFC and how the interpretation of fair value is the problem not the method itself. The Positive Accounting Theory (PAT) is also discussed and analysed in terms of it being the dominant theory to justify accounting regulations and standards (Anonymous. 2008a).†¦show more content†¦These areas have been underlined, as well as the accounting regulations, due to the economic difficulty that has been experienced and for the IASB to take a course of action to try re-gaining the trust of investors and large organisations . The amendments made by the IASB consist of: impairments, connecting gaps involving different accounting standards which apply to similar circumstances, financial instruments, changes in the area of consolidation, derecognizing, and improving the accounting for the off balance sheet items (IASB, 2009). ). The issue of bridging the gap between accounting standards has gone through some transition. Initially accounting regulations were able to use various techniques, in which increased the difficulty of compatibility. This was highlighted by the European Unions request for changes in re-classifying financial assets, analogous to the stance taken in the US, namely the Generally Accepted Accounting Policies (IAS) Fair Value Measurement According to IAS 39 (2009), fair value is: ‘The amount for which an asset could be exchanged or a liability settled, between knowledgeable, willing parties in an arm length transaction.’ In fact if there is an effective market, then the fair value would be equal to the current market price. Development of Business Represents a Part of Evolution Process

Question: Development of Menu Represents A Significant Part Of Why Evolution Process? Answer: Introduction: In the present time, the restaurant business has evolved significantly in order to keep all the customers satisfied with the provided products and services. Development of menu represents a significant part of evolution process, as it can induce customersmanagement to avail specific foods and services (Wansink and Love 2014). For that reason, restaurants often focus on developing the layout of the menu that is readable, informative and profitable. Psychologists have provided a list of practices that every restaurant should incorporate in their menu design for gaining higher profit from the market. In this report, the focus would be provided on the menu psychology of an Australian casual dining restaurant namely Guzman y Gomez. After establishment in 2006, Guzman y Gomez has developed 67 restaurants stores throughout Australia (guzmanygomez.com 2017). The report will aim to evaluate the psychological aspect of the menu. It will also focus on highlighting the factors that can have impa ct on the menu planning procedure. Evaluation of menu: As per the article by Malka and Soto (2015) restaurants that focuses on designing their menu in such a way so that it can highlight their most profitable offerings. Highlighting the items has been utilized in the retail sector for many years. The store counter, window and mannequin display are used to promote clothing and merchandise. Psychologists identified that customer notice of merchandise can induce them to purchase products on regular basis. On the other hand, if a customer fails to notice, it will be a zero probability of selling that product. Restaurants have focused on using merchandise concept in developing menu for highlighting their best products or most profitable item. It has been termed as menu psychology or menu design psychology. Over the years, the design or structure of menu has evolved on continues basis in order to provide restaurants the opportunity to enhance profit in the competitive market. Guzman y Gomez specializes in producing Tex-Mex dishes such as nachos, burritos, quesadillas and taco, which has allowed the restaurant to develop a separate space for it in the market. For that reason, it has focused on placing all the prime items in the menu list in such a way so that it can grab the attention of the customers significantly. The menu design of Guzman y Gomez has also included small pictures of all the items within the menu so that it can provide customers an idea regarding the kind of foods they will receive after ordering a particular product. As illustrated by Johns, Edwards and Hartwell (2013) four different categories or factors are available including Stars, Puzzles, Plow horses and dogs that restaurants need to accommodate within the menu design in such a way so that it can ensure maximum p rofit for the organization. Now, Stars represents those products that are high in sales and high in profit. On the other hand, Puzzles reflects products that high in profit but low in sales. Plow horses represents low profit but high sales products while Dogs reflects low profit low sales products (Fleming 2013). The menu design aspect of Guzman y Gomez has focused on categorizing all the products within these factors for creating maximum impact on the sales volume. Summary of findings: As described by Ozdemir (2012) restaurants can use multiple nuances to coax customers in spending on more high profit items. Guzman y Gomez also has designed the menu in such a way so that it can able induce customers to purchase the most profitable products on regular basis. Moreover, Guzman y Gomez has also provided a conscious effort at the time of setting prices for each item. It has avoided of using dollar sign at the time of placing price in the menu list. Psychologists have highlighted that dollar symbols can actually induce customers to feel that they are spending larger amount when they are not. Moreover, Guzman y Gomez has also tried to avoid pricing strategy of 99 cents at the end. General assumption on 99 cents is that the particular product is cheap and unsatisfying. For that reason, the pricing strategy of Guzman y Gomez has focused more on setting up the price with 95 cents at the end (Roseman, Mathe-Soulek and Higgins 2013). With increasing competition, all restaurant s are trying to introduce some unique and innovative servicesmanagement in order to provide value added services to the customers. It has induced Guzman y Gomez to include some additional information like weight of the products, ingredients of the products and also amount of calorie one would consume by eating a specific item into their menu design. It has allowed Guzman y Gomez to provide some value added services to all the customers, which is likely to create positive impact in retaining them for long period of time. It has allowed Guzman y Gomez to achieve consistent growth in the extremely competitive Australian restaurant market. Thus, it can be assessed that both placing of the products in the menu list and price setting of the items can create major impact on the overall business level of the organization (Ozdemir and Caliskan 2015). Therefore, it is necessary for all the restaurants to utilize both the factors in such a way so that it can induce customers to spend more on t he most profitable items on the product list. Recommendations: The present design of menu of Guzman y Gomez has helped them to achieve continues success in the market. Guzman y Gomez has included a stepwise procedure in their present menu design in order to induce customers to spend more on more than one product (Yang 2012). However, some areas of menu design will have to consider by Guzman y Gomez in order to maximize the impact on the business level. Firstly, it will have to focus on using top right theory of the menu design comprehensively for inducing customers to select most profitable items on regular basis. The top right theory suggests that customers look at the top right section of the menu list at the beginning. For that reason, keeping the most profitable item in this section will allow that Guzman y Gomez to grab the attention of the customers easily. Secondly, Guzman y Gomez can also use box technique at the top right section in order to prominent the prime products comprehensively. Thirdly, Guzman y Gomez will have to focus on plac ing the Puzzle products at the most prominent position of the menu card. It will help the restaurant to increase the sales volume of the products that are high in profit but low in sales. Moreover, increasing popularity of Puzzle products will allow Guzman y Gomez to increase the number of prime products in their offering list in near future (Feldman et al. 2014). Fourthly, Guzman y Gomez will have to focus on developing menu with all the detailed information about the each item apart from the names and price list. For instance, it needs to add information about the time customers will have to wait for a particular product before serving. It will also need to provide detailed information about the amount of calorie associated with the each of the item. Fifthly, Guzman y Gomez needs to focus on using round figure prices rather than decimal pricing strategy. It can help Guzman y Gomez to increase the value of overall services. Conclusion: The above illustration has highlighted the fact that development of effective menu design is critical for achieving success in the market. It induces customers to purchase products that are more profitable in nature, which eventually creates positive impact on the overall sales volume. For that reason, restaurants need to be very careful at the time of designing the menu, as it can help to handle all the future challenges of the market effectively. With an age gap there is always going to be lifestyle differences. A younger person may enjoy nights out with their younger friends and have no interest in starting a serious relationship, whereas, their older partner might be at an age where they want to settle down and spend quiet time alone with them. However, if one person involved lies about what they want from the relationship then this can cause big problems further down the line. If you want a serious relationship, but the person you are dating only wants a casual one, then you need to think long and hard about whether they are worth sacrificing your dreams for. However social situations with family and friends can be challenging. Despite these potential problem areas, many relationships with an age gap are highly successful. The key is honesty and communication. Being open and truthful from the start about what you are looking for in a relationship, and even life, is the best way to ensure you are able to achieve this. Chinas Space Program Essays - Human Spaceflight, Spaceflight

Chinas Space Program CHINA CITES 'GREAT PROGRESS' IN MANNED SPACE PROGRAM By Daniel Southerland (c) 1986, The Washington Post PEKING - China has made "great progress" in developing a manned space program and the day it launches a man in space for the first time is "not far off," an official newspaper said Sunday. The overseas edition of the People's Daily, the leading Communist Party newspaper, said China has "already begun the work of choosing its first team of astronauts." Although it gave few details, the article made it sound as though China is preparing to launch its first men into space much sooner than many foreign observers had thought possible. "We have already succeeded in producing life-support systems and in solving the problems of controlling gas composition and pressure in the cabin and the level of heat and humidity," the report said. The report, published Sunday, said the Chinese have developed the largest centrifuge of its kind in Asia and Europe to simulate cabin conditions created by the launching of a spaceship. "The day when a Chinese goes roaming through space is not far off," the report said. On June 5 of this year, Sun Jiadong, vice minister of astronautics, told reporters that China would put a man into space but that such a program "must be worked out gradually in keeping with our needs and capabilities." A foreign observer who has followed the Chinese space program said it could still be a few years before China puts a man into orbit. The People's Daily report did not say how many astronauts are being trained or exactly when they might go into space. The Chinese have appeared to be working for several years on problems associated with building a space shuttle. A high-ranking official of China's national defense, science and technology commission confirmed last May that there had been debate over the feasibility of deploying a space shuttle. According to the China Business Review, a magazine published in Washington, D.C., China has been experimenting f or more than 10 years with the thermal problems associated with spacecraft re-entry. The Chinese also have been developing space food and space suits for at least seven years, according to published reports. The first publicity about the astronauts began to appear in Chinese magazines in 1980. In early 1980, Science Life magazine, published in Shanghai, described a group of astronauts undergoing fairly sophisticated training, including use of a high-speed centrifuge and a simulated spaceship. Trainees were reported to be wearing airtight spacesuits designed for use on the moon. ===============================================================================

The Umayyad Dome Of The Rock Analysis Religion Essay Example

The Umayyad Dome Of The Rock Analysis Religion Essay Example The Umayyad Dome Of The Rock Analysis Religion Essay The Umayyad Dome Of The Rock Analysis Religion Essay The Umayyad Dome of the Rock is one of the cardinal plant of Islamic architecture. At this point, it is deserving adverting the fact that the Umayyad Dome of the Rock is celebrated work of art and architecture, which had a figure of inexplicit significances among which it is possible to individual out political deductions and correlativities to Biblical Bibles. In add-on, the Umayyad Dome of the Rock reveals the impact of external factors, including the impact of Christianity and Judaism on the architecture of the dome. In this respect, it is deserving adverting the fact that, historically, Islam and Judaism were closely intertwined, although Islam had appeared centuries ago since the visual aspect of Judaism and Christianity. In this respect, it is deserving adverting the fact that many specializers ( Cowling, 2005 ) position Judaism as one of the major monotheistic faith, which became the precursor of such universe faiths as Christianity and Islam. In fact, the outgrowth of Islam w as the development of the new faith, which though had a batch of similarities to Judaism and Christianity. In such a context, the similarity between Islam, Christianity and Judaism can be viewed as the consequence of the historical interaction between these faiths. In this respect, it is deserving adverting the fact that the development of Islam was closely intertwined with Judaism and Christianity because representatives of these faiths have interacted since ancient clip. Even though Islam emerged in the 7th century AD, the population converted to Islam had an extended experience of interaction with Judaist, whereas Jews ever lived in Muslim states. In such a manner, the interaction between Islam, Christianity and Judaism was determined by the historical development of both faiths and it was grounded on the vicinity of both civilizations. In such a context, the inexplicit significance of the Umayyad Dome of the Rock reveals non merely concealed Islamic context and significance but besides it reveals the influence of Christianity and Judaism on Islam. At first glimpse the Umayyad Dome of the Rock is the manifestation of the traditional Islamic architecture. In this respect, it is deserving adverting the fact that the Umayyad Dome of the Rock was built in Jerusalem, the metropolis, which was sacred for Muslims every bit good as representatives of other mainstream faiths in the part, such as Judaism and Christianity. At this point, it is of import to put accent on the fact that the sanctity of Jerusalem was, after all, inherited by Islam from Judaism and Christianity ( Rabbat, 14 ) . Therefore, the building of the Umayyad Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem was an of import determination and, in all chance, it was determined by the importance of edifice in the political and spiritual context. In fact, the building of the Umayyad Dome of the Rock was the effort to demo the power of Islam and its domination in the Holy City Jerusalem. On the other manus, specializers point out that the Dome of the Rock has no instantly discernable intent or map other than the commemorating 1, and even that is riddled with uncertainnesss ( Rabbat, 12 ) . However, such uncertainness refering the intent of the building of the Umayyad Dome of the Rock is caused by the assortment of deductions refering the significance of the edifice and its intents. In other words, the diverseness of positions on the Umayyad Dome of the Rock leads to the outgrowth of legion readings of the significance of the edifice. At this point, it is deserving adverting the fact that the Umayyad Dome of the Rock represents the manifestation of the Islamic architecture. On the other manus, specializers point out that it is necessary to see the Dome as a memorial which used Biblical intensions and Christian-Byzantine signifiers to enforce Islam s presence in the Holy City. The combination would connote that the new religion considered itself the continuance and the seal of the two predating 1s: Hebraism and Christianity ( Rabbat, 12-13 ) . Such a decision derives from the monumental architecture and the location of the edifice. At this point, it is deserving adverting the fact that the Umayyad Dome of the Rock has incorporated elements of Biblical texts and Bibles. Hence, the Umayyad Dome of the Rock reveals the close links of Islam with other faiths, such as Christianity and Judaism. The similar tendencies between faiths can be traced by similarities of their spiritual constructs and thoughts. For case, Christianity, Islam and Judaism are monotheistic. In this respect, Judaism was one of the first monotheistic faiths, whereas Islam is one of the latest universe faiths, which had gained the public blessing and support of many trusters. Christianity, Judaism and Islam acknowledge one God merely, although each faith has its ain God. In add-on, similarities can be traced in sacred texts and books of Judaism and Islam. At this point, it is deserving adverting the fact that Islam and Judaism have similarities in sacred texts because their sacred texts are interrelated. To set it more exactly, they frequently refer to similar or indistinguishable events in the history and spiritual life of Jews and Muslims. As a consequence, they focus on similar events but the reading of these events every bit good as their inside informations may differ depending on the faith. Hence, the elements of Biblical texts and Christian and Judaist constructs can be traced in the Umayyad Dome of the Rock. At the same clip, it is possible to presuppose that the Biblical elements in the Umayyad Dome of the Rock can be determined by the effort of designers to demo the power of Islam and its high quality in respect to other faiths. In such a manner, the Umayyad Dome of the Rock could typify the high quality of Islam because it showed that all Biblical texts and sacred texts of Christianity and Judaism were incorporated in the Umayyad Dome of the Rock that implies their subordination to Islam. In add-on, specializers ( Rabbat, 15 ) point out the political deductions of the Umayyad Dome of the Rock. What is meant here is the fact that the Umayyad Dome of the Rock could be constructed to the show the power of the opinion dynasty. To set it more exactly, the opinion dynasty efforts to demo its regard to God and faith. In such a context, the building of the Umayyad Dome of the Rock was the manifestation of the effort of the governing dynasty to go forth its hint in history of Islam and to demo its power. At the same clip, the building of the Umayyad Dome of the Rock implied that the opinion dynasty is ageless because its regulation will last every bit long as the Umayyad Dome of the Rock bases. In such a context, the Umayyad Dome of the Rock has a symbolic political significance. In add-on, the edifice was constructed in Jerusalem, which was non merely the spiritual centre but besides the topic of heat political battle. For case, Crusades ever aimed at the invasion of Jerusale m, whereas Muslims ever attempted to continue the metropolis as the Holy City of Islam. Therefore, taking into history all above mentioned, it is of import to put accent on the fact that the Umayyad Dome of the Rock had multiple significances and deductions. In this respect, it is possible to individual out the spiritual, political and cultural deductions of the building of the Umayyad Dome of the Rock. The chief point of the building of the Umayyad Dome of the Rock was to demo the high quality of Islam and Islamic civilization over others and to demo the power of the governing dynasty under which the Umayyad Dome of the Rock was constructed. In such a manner, the Umayyad Dome of the Rock became a symbol of Islam in Jerusalem.

Reflection Paper Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Reflection Paper - Essay Example This paired with the fact that the children that I work with have special needs makes it more challenging. I have a particular female autistic student who is 13 years of age. She is non-verbal and she is constantly hitting anyone who she is able to reach. Her hitting actions are usually around the time when is going to go through her menstrual period. She may not be aware of her menstrual cycles and she may not be able to control her actions but she does aggressively hinder those close to her. Given all of the information that I know about special needs students, autism, and mandated regulations, I am still in a position of wanting to do more. It is obviously not easy to work with her or with the other students with special needs. I feel at times that I have to be divided in many parts while imparting classroom teaching, meeting standards, and being attentive that they do not commit self injuries and/or injure others. This has been a â€Å"schooling† process for me. I enjoy my work. I want to help all of the students that I am in close contact that are special needs students. I believe in the No Child Left Behind Act because these students need to have equal opportunities in their educational stages. It is, however, over cumbersome. This will not deter me from continuing to work with special needs students. This is a constant daily challenge to be able to service those in needs and that have their rights to obtain an

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl - Essay Example â€Å"Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl† shows a clear example of the inhumane abuses placed upon slaves. It was written by the slave girl herself so that the information is firsthand. The author tells about her experiences and observations about slavery. As a girl, Harriet Jacobs was blessed to have a master who treated her well. She was not sent to the farm as would any male servant would have been treated. Instead, she was taught to do household chores and even sew. Perhaps these are instances that gave her also the privilege of having been taught by her mistress to read and write. She experienced better days compared to other slaves who would be out in the field under the heat of the sun, whipped by overseers when unable to perform well and constantly exposed to the harsh treatments of slave owners. She was even given time to play whenever her mistress perceived she was tired from sewing. This made Jacobs’ situation quite odd for a slave. She was made to enjoy l ittle joys as a child. As a result, she perceived life better than his brother did. Initially, Jacobs fancied that someday, she could gain her freedom in a manner that is praise-worthy. Unlike her brother who told her that gaining freedom is easier said than done, Jacobs held positive outlook in her life about her situation. Later in her life though, Jacobs proved his brother to be right when she experienced many bitter circumstances. First, she witnessed how her grandmother was cheated on about her mistress’ debt form her as well as her long-promised freedom. Luckily, her former master’s relative knew her well and therefore bought her when she had the chance to do so. When Jacobs served her new master, she became the object of her male master’s sexual abuses. Consequently, the master’s wife despised and hated her. Being a woman and a slave, Jacobs was vulnerable to such circumstances. The situation was true in so many circumstances as revealed by the nar rations of the author but she never dreamed of becoming a victim herself one day. She claims that she vowed to never degrade herself and the people that she loved in such a manner however her circumstances pressed her to use her womanhood. Perhaps because Jacobs thought when opportunity presented itself that her womanhood has been violated by her master anyway, that she would rather benefit from it. The author met an unnamed white man to whom she willingly gave herself to and was soon to sire her son. Whatever pressures the woman might have been is of course not for people to judge or question but this shows how a woman can use whatever she has for her own benefit. Of course this is not to praise and encourage such manner of solving problems but it shows how a woman can always be armed with the benefits of being a woman. On the contrary, it is also important to mention that the author’s being a woman has been a disadvantage because she was vulnerable to sexual abuse. It is co nsidered in this condition that male slaves are at an advantage over their female counterparts. There have been no reported sexual abuses toward them and this makes their situation better than women and if there would have been cases, they are not at a disadvantage at all because they do not become pregnant. For the women slaves though, their affairs with the opposite sex, whether consensual or not, is difficult to hide because there was a great probability of
